Default Cannot find Marriage, so they probably weren't!!

    Hello Readers,

I've looked quite exhaustively for the marriage details (a 2nd marriage) of GtGtGrandfather. He, John Hancock was born Fen Ditton, Cambridge c.1835. I've all the census info for him too and am certain of his timeline. He married for a 2nd time c.1880 - I can only assume it was around that time, as he had 1 child, Ann Elizabeth who was c.19 years old in the 1901 census. We **think** this 2nd wife was JANE, and that she was born in Firth, Huddersfield, Yorkshire.

I CANNOT though, find any trace of their marrying! Of course, they might NOT have married...

What I find quite sad is, the 3rd and 4th child from his first marriage were put into a workhouse when only 3 & 6 years old, yet when he remarried he didn't have them with him according to the census for 1881, '91 or 1901.

Can anyone that has an interest please have a look up and see if they can find these elusive marriage details'. Also, if the child was born in 1880, would her mothers maiden name be mentioned on the certificate? She was certainly down as a HANCOCK in the 1901 census.

    Many thanks for reading,

    M

The B/C for Ann Elizabeth should have the full names for both her parents including her mothers maiden name ...

What makes you think his 2nd wife might have been called Jane ?

    Thank you for your message.

What makes me think his 2nd wife was Jane?? Because another researcher who has amassed more info than me (so far) has named her as Jane, and their daughter Ann Elizabeth. He's also hit that bally brick wall with regards to both their marriage AND Janes Maiden name. I've asked a Family History researcher for help, and she suggested (just looking at area, dates, names, ages etc.) that her name MIGHT have been Mary Jane as a Mary J Hancock death for the same area is recorded. Of course, both researchers could well be wrong!!

    Hi Morgana,

In 1881 John is working as a tanner's labourer, and boarding with a Cross family. He's a widower and living in Beverley, Yorks.

In 1891 and 1901 he's living with his 'wife' Jane (born Beverley) and dau Ann Elizabeth born circa 1882 in Beverley.

This birth record looks likely for Ann Elizabeth.

Hi Slizzy, good to hear from you. Thanks, yeah - I've got all this so far. I've also looked through 2,500 records for John Hancock marriages and found nothing appropriate. I think I'm gonna have to bite that bullet and buy Ann Elizabeth's birth cert. I'll phone the Registrar at Beverley first though, to ensure the mothers' maiden name will be on it otherwise complete waste of time.

    Many thanks,
