Default Searching for grandfather's half sister

    Hi,

I wonder if anybody can help. My great grandfather was married before he married my grandfather's mother. His 1st wife died in childbirth, but the child survived. I have her birth certificate and she was called Bessie Curl and was born in 1920 in Norwich.

The story goes that Bessie was brought up by her maternal grandparents, but I cannot find any further information about Bessie or what happened to her after 1920 and I think her name may have been changed-does anyone have any idea where to start please?

Bessie's mother was Harriet Maud Curl, formerly Goodson, nee Miller.

I have found Harriet on the 1911 census with her 1st husband and daughter from that marriage (and I believe there was another daughter as well). Her 1st husband was killed in action in 1918.

I cannot find a trace of Harriet on any other census though. I can find a Maud Ethel Miller with the same birth details, but that's it.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Many Thanks in advance

    Mrsp

    Hi Mrsp

There are a couple of possibilities that I have found for Harriet but need her birth details in order to look further.

    Hi Geniegenie,

Thanks for your reply. The only birth information I have for Harriet comes from the 1911 census where she is 24, so born abt.1887. Interestingly she is down as Maud Harriet and is born in Heigham, Norwich.

    Many Thanks

    Hi Mrsp,

Why do you think Bessie's name was changed?

    Hi Geniegenie and Slizzy,

Thanks for your replies. I had found that census record, but when I traced back to the 1891, if I remember correctly, she came up as Maud E Miller, which completely threw me!

Thank you for the birth record of Charlotte. I think Bessie's name was changed because I cannot find a marriage or a death for her.

I know she stayed in the Norwich area because my grandfather's sister-in-law worked with her in the Startrite shoe factory, but unfortunately she never divulged her name and is no longer available to ask.

    Thanks again,

    Regards

    Mrsp
