Thread: McKechnie, John Reid c1820

Looking for John Reid McKechnie, possibly from Scotland. His son, William Benjamin lists him as his father on his marriage to Margaret Davies at Prescot Parish Church, Lancashire on 25 Dec 1886. The marriage certificate doesn't say whether his father is deceased, but I've found a death entry for JR McK on Free BMD in 1881. All help appreciated, Paula

Was William McKechnie also born in Scotland . If you do not know, what age was he on his marriage certificate. There are a few John McKechnie born around that time.

As William and Margaret name their son born in Q2 1889 – John Reid McKechnie – I think that this could be a death index record for a possible brother to William

If so, then taking in to account the fact that William and Margaret are living in Windle in 1901 and he is a glass cutter - this very much looks like the family in the 1881 Census

1861 and 71 is a mystery.



No sign of Ellen and John... No sign of Ellen in 91 or 01

Starlight - Wm seems to always show himself as St Helens born but I've found a birth registration for a Wm McKechnie in Liverpool Q4 1862. I'll need to send off for it. He is a batchelor of 25 on his marriage to Margaret aged 20. The death registration I found was 1880 (sorry not 1881) but in Keighley. The reason this might be interesting is that there is a 1861 entry in Brick Houses, Keighley, showing a family headed up by John McKechnie (40), wife Ellen (40) and various children including a John, Agnes and Ellen. I did have high hopes that this might be the same family but there is a death record for an Ellen in Keighley in 1896 aged 76, and that would fit them.



GenieGenie - I had noticed the death registration in 1889 for John Reid and would come to the same conclusion. Not sure how I prove it though!

Wm and Margaret have been married for 24 years, total children 8, living 6, died 2. I suppose Jane and Charles have died. Will need to check that.



We know that the family came from Scotland. I would take a stab at John Reid Snr and maybe wife Ellen (or an earlier wife?) and even the first born JR all being born in Scotland even though they say they are from Lancashire.



Thanks for your thoughts. I've a few things I can follow up but I've no idea where they are before 1881.

Ellen is a widow in 81... couldn't find a marriage or death for her locally.



61 Keighley is promising, but where is 9 yr old William in 71.

Mother and son? Wonder if they are relatied?



No sign of widow Ellen but I don't know when the cemetery was first used. Maybe she remarried? Need to check. Also, no sign of Jane from the 1891c who doesn't appear in 1901. Maybe she didn't die but by 1901 she would be 14 and working, maybe away from home as a servant or domestic?
