1861 Durham Edward Hennessey

Could anyone with access to this census please look up Edward Hennessey (born abt 1842 in Ireland) Living in Durham (household schedule number could possibly be 165).

I'd be interested in who he was sharing a house with and whether there were any other family members living with him.

This is my great great grandfather who came over from Ireland and apart from that we don't know much about him or his parents/siblings

Edward Hennessey

1861 census: Living in Durham with his parents Michael and Elizabeth and four siblings - William, Patrick, Michael and Ann. The occupation listed for the father and sons was coal miner.

Hi Nettapet,

If you look carefully at the image, it is easy to see why a transcriber would read the “n” as an “m”.

Elizabeth appears to be a widow here. She is living with her son Patrick and next door to who appears to be her son William. There is no wife listed for Patrick.

Her birthplace listed is Ireland. The age listed on the record as 60 would give her birth year abt 1811. If this is your Elizabeth, it places her birth year much earlier than her husband Edward.

That definitely looks like her son William, year of birth fits with 1861 census as does the year of birth for her son Patrick who she was living with. What's confusing is that on the 1861 census Elizabeth is listed as being 55 which would make her birth year approx 1806 but in the 1871 census she's listed as being 60 making her birth year approx 1811

I am only too happy to send you what I can!

I have the same issue re ages for a GGM who gave her age as 35 in 1901 and after her husband died, for the 1911 census she gave her age as 49. So the question would be...did she really know her age or did the enumerator give her an age?

Do you have Elizabeth's birth cert?

No, haven't been able to find it, all I know is that she was born in Ireland somewhere between 1806 and 1811 (although if the entry I've found for her on the 1881 census is correct if could even be 1821

). But I've no idea whereabouts in Ireland she was born or what her maiden name was. I've tried some of the Ireland links on here but can't even trace her wedding to Michael without knowing which area of Ireland they were married in, seems Hennessey is a very common name in Ireland.

Do you have her death cert or her marriage cert? My GGMs death cert gave me her birth date and place. I understand though whether that information is on the cert depends on the practice when that person died. The sponsors on the marriage cert may give you a clue. Have you tried searching for the place listed on the passenger record of 1912?

I don't have any of the certificates yet, only just discovered that generation of the family this week so haven't yet been able to order them. All I have to go off is the free information online & what family members know about them from their searches. It does seem though that they came over from Ireland between 1845 & 1853 I dont know if there's passenger records for this time I shall have a scout around and see what I can find out.

Sorry but your last comment has me puzzled ..." Have you tried searching for the place listed on the passenger record of 1912?" What passenger record? And how do I find it?
