    Default Workhouses

    Hi

Just wondered if anybody knew if it was possible to trace anything to do with workhouses. I just found my Great nan was in the workhouse in Billericay, but i would like to find out her parents or any siblings. Ive tried free bmd for her birth but cant find it. I do know from her death certificate she was bn 1889 in Brentwood, essex.

    Any tips?

    Hi BexyBraz,

There is a lot of interesting information in the links and tips forum. Just put workhouse in the Links and tips search engine at the top right of that forum.

Workhouse registers and other records are generally with the relevant county records office.

All ages without a date of birth have to be viewed as variable, so your death certificate could be 5 years out regarding your birth search.

If she was married, the certificate might have her fathers name on it.

If deceased you can check back to see when he likely died and whether it was the reason she was in the workhouse.

But without her name it is hard for anyone to help.

She might be in an institution on a census year and others with the same surname there might be relatives?

    Hi BexyBraz,

As Jeuel has suggested, I have found the best place to look is in the records office for that County. I have a lot of information on some of mine including why they were there, reports, and reasons for transferal to other workhouses and institutions.
