Thread: Charles Armstrong- Nottingham

Hi



Would appreciate help in finding the death of this person. It would be in Nottingham post 1919, as had a child then. I don't know who his mother and father are, born illegitimate but on his marriage certificate it says Walter Armstrong father. Born approx. 1886 in Nottingham. Have a birth certificate for a Charles Armstrong 1886 but not hopeful it is correct one.



Suggestions of where to look other than freebmd or Ancestry. I am prepared to go to Nottingham just don't know where or what to ask for.

Deaths aren't fully transcribed yet so chances are they won't be on freebmd. You would need to check the death indexes each quarter for each likely year on ancestry looking at the original pages.

1901 census has only 1 Charles Armstrong born 1886 in Nottingham, and there is a Walter Armstrong with him though he appears to be his brother.

That is the family I'm looking at which you saw on the 1901 census. I was just hoping that his death certificate might give his biological father. The mission goes on, I will have another try on ancestry.

His death cert won't give his father's name. Fathers' names are only included on death certs for children, not adults.



Illegitimate children sometimes gave the name of another male relative or stepfather as their own father on marriage certs, to seem respectable, so its possible Charles gave his older brother's name. Of course its also possible Charles' elder brother had the same father and was named after him.



Martha may have used the children's father's surname as her own OR she may have kept her maiden name but passed herself off as married/widowed.

I didn't realise that so thanks for that information. This is the only branch of English people on my tree and I'm so use to Scottish certificates (where practically everything is written down) that I didn't know that. I did trawl through the BMD on ancestry last night, upto 1953 and still nothing
