Thread: I'm stuck on my g'g'grandfather

Help please....My great great grandfather Frederick Fisher was born in 1839 Bradford Wiltshire, he was in the army and I know that in 1881 he was retired from the army. He married a lady called Eliza she was born in the East Indies and this is where i come a cropper, I dont know her maiden name, cant find where they were married or anything else I cant even find Fredericks father & mother.

In the next breath I am stuck again on Frederick Fisher son Harold Percival Fisher born 1880 Salford, he married Edith Perry now as far as my mother is concerned she thinks that Ediths father was George and he married Frances Fletcher born Barbados 1857, where I am stuck is who was Frances Fletcher mother I think it was Sarah, born in Ireland but i dont know her surname or whereabouts in Ireland she was born.

Can anyone help me please......

I can't find a marriage between Frederick Fisher & Eliza Oliver. Maybe someone else can help with this.

As Eliza's younger sister was born in Dublin I wonder if the marriage might have taken place there.

I have seen an 1881 census with a Frances Fletcher with a mother Sarah. I have checked later censues but cannot see an Edith born to Frances. There is an Edith that fits but with different parents names. The marriage certificate of Edith and Harold will confirm their father's names.

Edith, as I think you know is shown with George and Frances on the 1901 Census in Whitworth Road, Gosport, but her recorded age is 12 giving her a birth year of 1889.

In 1871 George is shown training at The School of Military Engineering in Gillingham. In 1881 Frances Fletcher/Perry is shown living with her mum Sarah – born Ireland and her 2 children Lilly Rose and George in Gillingham, Kent. In 1891/1901 Alverstoke, George is a storeman, sub-mining stores at Fort Blockhouse and living with Frances and their family - Edith’s older siblings including George A C, Lily Rose, Flora A and Edith herself – so that all seems to fit except the birth year of 1881 that you gave me for Edith - if your Edith was the child of Frances and George Perry then her birthdate would be C1888/9 and this would, most likely be the index entry for her birth.

If you follow Edith’s grandmother Sarah – in 1901 she and her daughter Rosalinde are living in Gillingham. Rosalinde B: 1867 Demara, West Indies – a sister to Frances? - and if you follow Rosalinde back you find her in 1881 living with her Aunt and Uncle Benjamin and Elizabeth Skilton. In 1871 Census this Aunt and Uncle (shown as Skelton) are caring for 2 nieces an Emily A Fletcher B: 1864 and an Ellen V R Fletcher 1868 both born West Indies. Two more sisters for Frances? Also, interestingly, Elizabeth Skilton/Skelton is listed as B: 1847 West Indies.





Hopefully, a piece of the above info will be able to lead you to Sarah’s maiden name. I know that you already have some census records but for those that you don’t – I will be happy to post them if you let me know which you don’t have or can’t find.
