    Default 1861 and 1871 censuses for Bielefeld/Byfield

Can anyone help please as I am stumped.

I am looking for an ancestor, Alfred Bielefeld b.1833 in Clerkenwell, Midlesex. I have followed him from 1841 to 1901, but I just cannot find him on the 1861 or 1871 censuses.

I know that from 1881 to 1901 he was in Holborn Workhouse on his own. In the 1881 censuses he is shown as being a widower (to date I have not found who he married).

His occupation in the censuses has been, Engineer's apprentice, Engine Driver, General Labourer and an Engine Fitter.

His actual family surname is Bielefeld, but it has been Anglicized to Byfield in the 1881 censueses and then back to Bielefeld again.

He died in Holborn Workhouse according to his Death certificate.

I just cannot find the 1861 and 1871 censuses, nor his wifes name.

Any help would be most appreciated.

    Hi Asahazoe,

Yes thanks. I am a subscriber of the Ancestry.com site too, but I just cannot find the name. My only thoughts are that Alfred missed the 1861 and 1871 censuses, or gave the wrong name or spelling. I have tried varied spellings of the name, both Prussian and Anglicised.

    I am just completely stumped.

    Many thanks anyway.
