    Default Mining

    Hello all,

Was just wondering if any of you fantastic people out there maybe able to help, as nearly all my family was miners, and worked in Glasshoughton, Fryston and Weldale Pits, i was wondering if there would be anywhere where they would keep records of the employers. I have some ancesters that aparently came from Wales and they are being very elusive but i know that they worked in the mines, I have been looking in the wales census but finding my gggrandad with the surname Evans is like finding a needle in a hay stack im not sure what to do now.

    any help would be great

    Di

    Hi Di

What have you got so far? Christian names, DOBs on specific people? There are some pit employee records around but would help if you can give some dates to establish the period that you are looking for - Tell us what you have got and what you haven't and lets go from there

    Hi Di,

Neil123 has added a new link to the link and tips forum. There are others there also but mainly have names of those that died.

So far all i have is that my ggrandad was born in 1886, as said not sure where, I have been told he was born in wales but know one knows where, he married in 1913 at whitwood parish, Castleford. His name is Josiah Evans, he died in 1965 in Cutsyke, Castleford. His father was also called josiah Evans.

I have no idea what my ggrandad's mother was called, so im a bit stuck there, i did take a guess and thourght if he married in Castleford and died there then he obviously moved up to yorkshire and his dad was present at his marriage, so i checked the castleford cemetery's and there is only two josiah's burried in castleford mine and another that i could persume is his father. if this is the case then the possible father did not come from Wales but Staffordshire, and my ggrandad was actually born in Normanton according to the census that i have followed through (again this is just guess work) as the remaining family members are sure he was born in Wales.

Guess thats why i wanted to know about the employers records to see if i could find him and try to confirm where he was from.

    thanks for helping

    Di

    Hi Di

This is your GGrandad’s Marriage Index Record

    Marriages Jun 1913

Evans Josiah Williamson Pontefract Vol: 9c Pg: 228

Williamson Marion Evans Pontefract Vol: 9c Pg: 228

This is the only birth on BMD for a Josiah Evans registered in Wales in 1886 - Do you know if your GGrandad had a middle name?

    Births Sep 1886

Evans Josiah Rees Pontardawe Vol: 11a Pg: 704

The district Pontardawe spans the boundaries of the counties of Breconshire and Glamorgan

Well Josiah Evans should be easier to trace than John Evans and Evan Evans which are my ex's family names!

Welsh history is a nightmare, ex has precisely half the surnames in his tree that I have, on his Welsh side. Whole streets on the census have dozens of people with the same names, impossible to tell if they are related or not or which family is the right one!!!

    Hi Diane,

There is this familly on the 1911 census. It may be worth you buying some credits to enable you to look at the original sheet.

    They were living in Pontefract.

    Josiah Evans age 60

    Josiah Evans age 25

    Lilly Evans age 23

    John Evans age 20
