Perhaps they are not stepchildren, but nieces /nephews that were being looked after,as they should have appeared in the 1901 census as step children. Maybe getting a birth cert for one of them might tell you more?

I have gone back to the 1901 census and they were at 6 Beecher Street, and remained there for the 1911 census. I wonder why they are step children, as their names appear in 1901 and 1911 with both parents.

There is a family tree on An****y that gives a date of birth for Benjamin of 25 Oct 1868, but no details of Florence.

I think she was married before and only let the kids know when they were older, that poor Ben was not their Dad.

So more research for me then.

Ben and Florence are my gg granparents they went on to have my g grandad Albert Lawrence then my grandad Harold.
