Default Building my family tree from scratch, can anyone help

I knew this would not be easy, so if anyone out there can help me with building my family tree, I would be very grateful. my father was Maurice Chiverton b 1930, d2006, his father was originally a Bastiani and changed his name to Chiverton, taking, I believe, the maiden name of his mother in law. I have typed in Chiverton in my search at ancestryaid, but got no joy, so please HELP!!!!! Thanks in advanced

    Hi,

Welcome to the all absorbing world of family history.

You don't say where your father was born but I had a look on the birth register anyway. I could not find a Maurice Chiverton born in 1930 but did find a Maurice f H Bastian born December quarter in Falmouth vol 5c 175. The mother's maiden name was Sandow.

A quick look on FreeBMD brought up the following wedding

Dec 1929 Falmouth 5c 373 Frederick H Bastian and Lilian Sandow.

Do the names ring any bells? Was your Dad born in Falmouth? If these are the right people then do send off for the Certificates, particularly the marriage cert as this will give you the names of their fathers and their occupations, which should help you to go back further.

The address for ordering certificates is

    www.direct.gov.uk/gro

    Hope this has helped

    Hi,

thanks for the info, sorry I should have been more precise. My father was born either in Eden, Saudia Arabia or Aden, not sure which one. His date of birth was 31 August around 1930 or 31. I do know he married my mother on 9th January in 1951, could have been in Poole, Dorset.

    Thanks once again

    Greetings from Berlin

Not a problem Malcolm, but it does help to give as much information as you can re names, dates and places. Do you know his father's Christian name and place of birth?

    Hi Malcolm,

Do you know the names of your grandparents? Was Maurice's father born abroad, or in the UK, did he marry in the UK?. If you don't know your grandparents names buying your parents marriage certificate would be a starting place. Here's the details.

Name: Eileen Lovell Spouse Surname: Bastiani Or Chiverton Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1954 Registration district: Bournemouth Registration county (inferred): Dorset Volume Number: 6b Page Number: 398

    Hi Emeltee

ok, I will try again, here goes.....

Father: Maurice Chiverton, born 31.08.1930 (+/- 2), birthplace Aden, so I am led to believe, he was definately not born in the UK. died in 2007

Mother: Eileen Chiverton, maiden name Lovell, born 08.01.1933.

Grandparents on my fathers side: Grandfather, Rossen Chiverton (previously known as Rossen Bastiani). Grandmother, Emma Chiverton. Sorry, don't know when they were born or married, am not even sure of the dates when they died.

Grandparents on my mothers side. Grandmother, Louise Lovell ( I hope it is correct). Grandfather Reginald. I know he passed away when I was very young, so must have been in late 50's or very early 60's.

I have asked my mother for some details, but that will take some while beefore I receive them. Thanks again for your help. Do you know what it would cost me to get all or as much as possible information to make my family tree? Even better, do you know someone that could do it for me, naturally I would pay to have it done. Once again many thanks and much appreciated.

    Kindest regards

    Malcolm Chiverton

    Hi Malcolm,

Could your grandfather have been LIONEL Rossen Bastiani? There's a birth for a baby of that name in 1897 registered Isle of Wight?

That's all I have had a chance to look for so far. In order to do things properly and to confirm all your findings it is advisable to purchase the birth, marriage and death certificates for each direct ancestor. At £7 a go that can work out quite expensive as time goes on and the number of direct ancestors grows. Howevr the birth certificates give the mother's maiden name and the marriage certificates give the father's names and occupations so they can be extremely useful.

If you would like me to search any futher send me a pm

    Hi again Malcolm,

There's a few Bastiani trees on Ancestry UK (you need to be a member to view them). One I've looked at is very exciting - your Lionel Rossen is on the tree along with his siblings, parents, grandparents etc. There's an obituary for Joseph Bastiani born circa 1832 (who I think is your gggrandfather) it's a very interesting obit, there's also a photograph of him. His father was Johannes and apparently born in Greece. If you aren't a member of Ancestry I can contact the tree owner on your behalf.
