    Default John Matthews (Bargee) married Hannah - but WHICH Hannah??

    Mind you, I've got a MUCH worse problem now, my gt.grandmother (Dads Mums side) Maria Matthews b. c.1852 Banbury, Oxford. Her parents were Barge people, working on the Birmingham & Wolverhampton Canal I think, John Matthews and Hannah. Problem is, I've found 4 - YES 4 possible marriages for John Matthews in that sort of region. Blast Hannah for being a popular name back in the 1800's !!

    Could you pls suggest where/how I might be able to pin down the CORRECT Hannah?? I know her birth date was c. 1812, Chipping Norton, Oxford. Looking at the census images, and seeing the eldest childs age, LOGICALLY it points to 1 possible Hannah - Hannah Woodfield, but **could** be Hannah Carpenter, b. 1828, Hannah Shaw b.1828 or Hannah Beardmore b.1826. These were all born near to the route of that canal.

    Any ideas, please??

    Hi Morgana, I've found them on the 41-61 census, and on all three they were living in the Banbury area, as Hannah was born in Oxfordshire I'd begin your search for a marriage there. Their eldest child on the 41 census was 6yrs old, born circa 1835. Therefore it would seem likely they were married around 1833 or 34.

    Morning Slizzy, cheers.

    Yes mate, I've got this much too, this is where I've discovered all the Hannahs. In the '51 census their eldest (it would seem) was William age 17. Go back 18 years or thereabouts brings us to early/mid '30s. Found all this on the IGI (?) but also last years on a download census website. But how do I pin it down to the correct Hannah??

    Hi Slizzy,

    Yep - I've got this much too. It's the HANNAH bit I'm in a quandry with!! I want to know WHICH Hannah, I've got::

    John Matthews married::

    1. Hannah Beardmore - 26/9/1826 - St.Martins, Birmingham

    2. Hannah Hannah Carpenter - 19/05/1828 -

    St.Martins,Birmingham

    3. Hannah Shaw - 11/11/1828

    4. Hannah Woodfield - 10/10/1831.

    I think this is something I'm gonna have to give up. Do you know whether Parish Birth entries of the early 1800s state the MOTHER'S maiden name? Me thinks not...(

    Morgana, you've reached a place in your research where we've all been. This is where it gets more difficult . Unfortunately there's no easy solution. Also, not all parish records are on the igi, therefore it's possible John and Hannah's marriage isn't on igi. A trip to Oxfordshire may be necessary. You could try contacting the Oxfordshire Record Office.

    Good luck

    Some do, some don't. It depended on the parish. However if the maiden name isn't on igi it's unlikely it would be in the Parish Register. What maybe in the register and not on igi is occupation.

    John Matthews married::

    1. Hannah Beardmore - 26/9/1826 - St.Martins, Birmingham

    2. Hannah Hannah Carpenter - 19/05/1828 -

    St.Martins,Birmingham

    3. Hannah Shaw - 11/11/1828

    4. Hannah Woodfield - 10/10/1831.

    I think the first three are too early, unless John and Hannah had a child before William, who maybe died.

    You could try this site. Perhaps on of the three contacts listed could redirect you to an online site

    Sorry to be bothering you with this again, I have the '51 & '61 census images, but the '41 I must have d/loaded the wrong one! The John Matthews on that was only him and said born in Tipson Staffs!!

    I've looked on FreeCEN but nothing is coming up - I don't think their records are anywhere near complete yet.
