Thread: Hamer's - John Spensley.

This message was nearly an A4 page long instead I will just cut straight to the chase instead of rambling.



John Spensley Hamer was my Great grandfather (details from nanans birth cert and marriage cert) he married Hannah Littlewood in Ryhill 1891(Going to Wakefield Library Wednesday hopefully to check out who it says is his father).



He died in 1938 age 71 making him born in 1866/67. According to 1911 census he was born in Walsden Lancashire. (1891 Bury) Sorry dont know how to add census's to my message.



Could someone just do a quick search of him in earlier census's and let me know wot they think cos he is confusing me on who is parents may be. I know i need his birth cert to confirm this but i think its a bit more complicated that just ordering the one for John S Hamer Born 1866 Bury 9C/407 or is it and i'm just making it more complicated.

Hi geniegenie thanks for taking the time to have a look for me.



Thats exactly wot i got, you'd think when first lookin that he was married to Elizabeth, had John, somethings happened to her, he then goes on to marry Mary.



Wots getting me is, Johns middle name is Spensley when you look for Mary and James's marriage in 1873 Bradford Her maiden name is Spensley?? Which then put doubts in my mind as to wether John is Mary's illigitamate child and they have just tagged Hamer on the end, or whether he is James and Elizabeths.

The 1911 census points towards him being James's as it says Mary has 5 children and i have 6 down for her including John the date of marriage is also right with the 1911 census.



I just don't know wot to think with them, am i seeing problems that are not there and making work for myself.

No not sure on maiden name but it could be Ogden from lookin on Lancashire BMD records.

Can fully understand why you are confused!



Have had a search around and am afraid that I can’t add to what you already have. If I were you I would send for the birth certificate and end the agony



There are quite a few John Hamer’s born in Bury around that time – finger’s crossed that John S. is your guy and that the S doesn’t stand for Samuel or Stephen etc.



I suppose there is even a possibility that the name spensley/spenceley had some other connection with the Hamer family – although I note that she was born in London – could Mary Hannah have been James’ cousin?
