I'm wondering if someone could help me, i'm recently new to family research and have started tracing my fathers line
In order to find the identity of my great-grandfather i obtained a birth certificate of my grand-father Harry William Butcher. And his birth certificate listed his parents as William Harry Butcher and Laura May Doy (maiden name Boughton).
Now i looked William Harry Butcher up online and found a birth of 1891 in Depwade, Norfolk, Suffolk. I thought this was the right person initially and accepted him as my great-grandfather but i'm having my doubts. My father is helping me in my research and thinks i'm being to overcautious and thinks i should move on and continue my research.
I have been trying to eliminate other people with the same name, i've found records for them being born in Surrey, Oxfordshire, and i feel i can eliminate these people as they are miles away from where my grandads side of the family grew up (mainly in the Norfolk area). But it still seems i have these niggling doubts that won't go away. It doesn't help that William Harry and his partner Laura May never married as this would give me a definitive birthdate and time.
Am i right to be overcautious or should i settle that i've got the right person and continue on down the line. Any advice would be great, thanks Paul
