Hi everone, I know i`m clutching at straws here. My 4x great grandfather was Hugh Riley, he was resident in Knutsford , Cheshire. on the census it states that he was born in Ireland, but no county mentioned , is ther anyway i could find out which county he came from? As i said i know im clutching at straws, but you never know. Regards Sadies.

    Hi Sadies,

Have you checked every census that he was alive at the time of . Sometimes you can strike lucky and find just one where the County was added.

Have you found a marriage certificate?

If English it should tell you his fathers name.

Still a longshot trying to find the father son combination of Riley in Ireland.

No personal experience finding any Irish ancestors beyond when they arrived in England.

If marriage in Ireland hopefully his wife had a rarer name.

If you haven't traced a maiden name, remember it should be on a childs birth certificate.

Anyone know when the Irish censuses were started and where to look for them?

    Hi Sadies

Have you tried his death certificate? As he is with the family in 1881 and then his wife is a widow in the 1891 Census - this looks like his death record

    Deaths Jun 1890

There is one more longshot that you might get from a death certificate.

If he died in hospital, you might be able to get a copy of extracts from his hospital notes.

Things that might be useful are date of birth, if you don't already have it, although if you are lucky this might be on a headstone and you can find that.

Frequently the place of birth are in the records, it might just say Ireland, it may have the county or town, or if you are unlucky it will just have their usual address.

I had pulled extracts of a couple of Great Grandparents from London Hospitals

got lots of interesting facts but in my case I wanted a date of birth and it just said their ages in both cases.

My searches were done for free as they were fied in the central archives, but another relative required someone to go elsewhere and that was going to cost £30 per hour.

If you can get your info for free then the death cert is cheap.

Hi, I searched four of the 8 places. The library didn't have Coleraine, Antrim for years before 1870, those must only be in Belfast, and I didn't get a chance to search two places with a 1847 birth for Mary, I'll search them next time. Here are the ones I did find (If you think one of them is the Mary you're looking for reply back so I can search for other siblings and give dates /sponsers/marriages):

7th July 1852. Multyfarnham Parish, Westmeath. Mother: Eliza/beth (Surname may be Wallace) Siblings found: James 1850, Elizabeth 1854, Anne 1856, Margaret 1859.

13th July 1850. Castletownkillpatrick, Meath. Mother: Judith/Julia Markey. Siblings found: Edward 1850, Thomas 1854, No name given 1857, Peter 1859, James 1863 and Margaret 1866.

8th Feb 1852. Annagh, Cavan. Mother: Mary

21st Aug 1849. Nobber, Meath. Mother: Anne Finneagan
