    Default Cook/Shaw marriage

I was given some great information in here but I've lost the paper I wrote it on. This 4 x grt aunt has become an obsession with me, I have finally found her birth in 1820 but am unable to find her marriage which I am sure was around 1843 in Newcastle, she was Jane Cook, born Lamesley, Co.Durham and she married George Shaw who I think was born Newcastle. They had two children, Mary Ann born 1845 and Jane born 1848 in Byker, Newcastle. Jane also had an illegitimate son Joseph born 1838. The only trace of Jane and family that I can find are the two girls with their grandparents in 1851......

This is one brick wall I'd love to knock down and any help here is very welcome and much appreciated

    Hi Chrissa

There is a marriage in Q3 1844 in Chester Le Street Durham showing both names - Jane Cook and George Shaw - other names on index for the entry are Michael Cairns and Jane Simpson.

Also in England and Wales Christening Records 1530 -1906

Mary Ann Shaw Gender: Female Christening Date: 23 Mar 1845 Christening Place: Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England Father's Name: George Shaw Mother's Name: Jane

    Hi Genie

Many thanks - of course the wedding would be in Chester le Street given that Jane lived in Lamesly - what on earth possessed me to search in Newcastle. Can a brunette have a blonde moment.

Now to continue the search - where were George and Jane in 1851? And every other census after that? But first I will enter this information in my not-so-little blue book.

    Thank you again Genie

    Hi Chrissa

A couple of possible leads/blind alleys, that may be worth looking into – might take a couple of bricks out of your wall – then again might put more in it.

In the 1871 England Census there is a Mary Ann Shaw living in Gateshead.

Her birth is given abt. 1845 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and her relationship to the household head, Matthew Pallister is Sister-in-Law.

    The household is as follows:-

    Matthew Pallister (30) B: 1841 - Darlington, Durham

    Catherine Pallister (30) B: 1841 - Newcastle Upon Tyne

    Robert Shaw Pallister (5) B: 1866 - Willingelbert, Durham

    Matthew I Pallister (4) B: 1867 - Gateshead, Durham

    Harriet Pallister (1) B: 1870 – Gateshead, Durham

    Sybella L Pallister (7months) B: 1870 – Gateshead, Durham

Mary Ann Shaw (26) B: 1845 – Newcastle Upon Tyne

The children’s christenings are on IGI.

Could Catherine be another daughter of your 4 x grt aunt Jane Cook/Shaw?

There is a Jane Shaw who marries a John Liddell or John Clark 1875 in Newcastle Upon Tyne Q1 10b 160. If you look at IGI for young Sybella Pallister mentioned above you will see that she was christened Sybella Liddell Pallister - just a coincidence?

There is a Mary Ann Shaw who marries a James Woodrow Matthews in 1877 in St. Thomas, Devon Q1 5b 135

In the 1881 census (the only one that I have been able to locate for Mary Ann Matthews) she is living in Topsham, Devon, her birth details are

    B: 1845, Northumberland.

There’s quite a few references to James Woodrow Matthews on the web as he was a JP etc. and left a legacy to Topsham, Devon but sadly no reference to his wife.

    Hi Genie

I checked the Pallister one out and Catherine led me to different parents. It's possible the family emigrated but as Mary Ann and Jane Shaw were with their Cook grandparents in 1851 I should be able to find Jane and George somewhere. I have found two possible deaths for Geoge and tried to find a remarriage for Jane, and am still searching a few of the possible marriages hoping to find her daughters with her under another name. Her illigitimte son Joseph born 1838 must have died though I can find no death but nor is he on any census. Looks like remaining a mystery...

I do appreciate your help and in a strange way I'm both disapointed and relieved no one else can find Jane - maybe I'm not as dumb as I thought then!
