Thread: James O'Brien born 7 7 1880 dublin ireland

I am trying to find history of my grandad James O'Brien and his parents john and Julia O'Brien. James was married to my grandma Mary Ann Durkin 12 2 1907 at the register office wrexham wales. James and Mary had three children John (my dad) Dennis,and James. Dennis married Catherine McGuire 21 1 1945 in Dublin.



Any help appreciated

Thanks for your reply, I'am a newbie so i hope this gets through to you. When you asked if he signed on in 1898, do you mean into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. If so could you tell me where you got that info from please. As we can only look at his WW1 Records.

It's World War pension records!

Hi Caferrie, Sorry we may have not made it clear in our initial post.We are aware of James WWI service records. In one of the records it states his parents name has John and Julia O'Brien, but we can't find that record about him ourselves, we have found out by his pension records that his date of birth was 07-07-1880. Another bit of information found was that James was discharged from the 23rd reg royal welsh fusiliers 3rd Batt in 1908 .Bearing in mind he got married to my grandma ( Mary Ann Durkin ) in Wrexham Wales in 1907. So what we are trying to find out is anything about John and Julia addresses etc,and James earlier records in the R.W.F.

IGI has a James O'Brien B: 7th July 1880 in Aughnagare, Tyrone, Ireland - father was John O'Brien and mother Mary Kelly O'Brien. Thoughts - it may be possible that Mary was birth mother and Julia married John later

- note "This is the old English way of spelling 'Welsh'. Throughout the years both forms have been used. Army Order No. 56 of 1920 finally confirmed that the official spelling should be 'Welch'."

Hi Eve, I searched again and this time it was easier as I used the index! (Had never before come across a parish before with so many records it needed an index!) Anyway am now sure that James was not baptized in Rathmines nor could I find any other O'Briens baptized in the years before&after 1880 to a John and a Julia. My theory is that they living with Rathmines parish but were closer in distance to another church, I have not however been able to find a map of Dublin City parishes to find out which other Churches he could have been baptized in.
