Default need help getting from London to Coggeshall

After lots of your help, I have found my ancestors with some amazing stories too. We have the chance to make a trip from Canada to London and I want to get to Coggeshall. Is there any other way other than renting a car?

Also, is a day trip to Whitchurch area possible by bus or train?

Thank you so much for any suggestions we are so excited.

    Linda

    Hi Linda,

There's more than one Whitchurch in the UK, can you be more specific?

I'm sure someone will be able to help.

I wish you a fabulous holiday, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it

The Whitchurch I need to see is in Wiltshire.

Not only have I found my William Stagg but right back to his gr.grandfather and more. William's father Charles had a brother George and his family came to Canada and through my searching a lady answered me from Portland, Oregon, U.S. and my William and her George were brothers. She searched for 20 years and then gave up 9 years ago. Now we both know about the manor house where they lived and the church etc. and much more. It's so rewarding that people are helping others so much.

I am a little nervous about driving, as we drive on the opposite side of the road here in Canada.

    Thanks so much.

If you are going to be based in London, then you need to get a train from Liverpool Street to Kelvedon and then find taxi or buses to Coggeshall.

Thanks Helen, still trying to figure out the best way to see Coggeshall. We arrive in Harwich on the Sat. morning and wanted to see Coggeshall first before going to London. Still not sure about driving on the "wrong" side of the road yet?

Will look into what it costs to get a ride there and then onto London.

Let you know if I meet any of your folks there.

    Helen,

Would you know if the Hertford museum is still closed? My Nunn ancestor's artifacts are on display there. Don't know if we will get to there or not especially if the museum is still closed.

According to the website http://www.hertfordmuseum.org/ it closed in Dec for work which is going to take a year to complete.

But it says you can contact the museum staff so I would do that and explain you are coming from another continent!

We got to Coggeshall and had a delightful visit. The lady opened the museum for us and guilded me around the places where my ancestors lived, worked and were married etc. It was wonderful. I now have a picture of the church in Coggeshall where my Dad's 4th gr.grandparents were married and the wedding certificate from 1761, written in beautiful script. It also has the names of their relatives listed on it and that means more new surnames to research.

We then had a day in Hampshire with a lovely couple who drove us around to all the churches and dwelling places of my ancestors on my Mom's side. Saw the silk mill where they worked and so much more. It doesn't get any better than that.

Thanks to everyone who helped in my search, everything is much appreciated. Now, back to more research.

    Linda
