Default 1841/1851 Census lookup for Stevens family

I am looking for information on relatives of William James STEVENS, born in Mitcham, Surrey in 1843.

From his wedding certificate in SCOTLAND his parents were Samuel Stevens and Mary Ann Dodds (Dodd on birth certificate).

My mother says his parents came from Ireland (but it doesn't explain why they traveled with their families to Scotland for the wedding when they all lived in the South of England).

I'd really appreciate the information on any Samuel Stevens in the Mitcham Surrey area in 1841 and also 1851 so that I might see where a) they came from and b) if William had any siblings.

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hi Phil

Had a good look through 1841/1851 for Samuel, Mary Ann and William - but no joy so far I'm afraid.

William James wont be on the 1841 census.

His birth certificate looks like Figs Marsh, Mitcham, Surrey. I can't suggest what else Figs could be or mean.

Samuel I think is the key, as Mary Ann could be Mary, Maryann, Ann, Annie etc.

Is it possible to tell me information on all the Samuels in the Mitcham area in 1841 & 1851.

It woud be good to open up this line as siblings might allow me to trace the family's movement. Elder siblings might allow me to trace back to Ireland if my mum is rght about where her Gt Grandfather came from.

    Thanks

    Phil

    Hi Phil

Figges Marsh once formed part of Mitcham Common.

I was unable to find any of your Stevens' in the Mitcham Area so I am thinking that there may be a transcription error/or they had moved elsewhere. Will have another try this afternoon.

    Fingers crossed

Thanks for the information on Figs Marsh, a mispelling then. I guess Figges was a person (i'll look it up just for the trivia).

The next record I have from William's birth is his marriage certificate in 1868 at Portabello, nr Edinburgh, where he has his address in the High St of that town.

In 1871 they were living in Romford, Essex where the family settled.

The marriage certificate is dificult to read but I could email it to you if you wish. Samuel is listed as a manager on it but I can't read of what/where.

Try this site and look under Mitcham for births and marriages. There are 84 Stevens between 1724 and 1871 in births, and 27 between 1567 & 1724. 14 maggiages between 1610 & 1710 and 11 between 1728 & 1870. hope this helps.

    Thanks Noggin,

Firstly, I never realised it was possible to search the IGIs that way.

    I have bookmarked the site.

Secondly, I found loads of Children for Samuel and Mary Ann Stevens.

Thirdly, Never believe what your mum says, why did I forget this rule!

I was told My descendant was the oldest child and his parents came from Ireland. Hence I never persued hard the 1841 census as my ancestor was born in 1844, so I have been looking for several years in the wrong age range and as a result my searches have been in vain. Seems he was the Youngest child, and judging by the IGI I probably have found another 20 relatives!

Yesterday I discovered it was the family that the Stevens married that came from Ireland. I've been looking in the wrong county too

The last week I have just been searching just my old dead ends, I can't believe how successful it has been.

Just need the 1841 census certificate now.

    Many thanksDD
