    Default Gloria Robson

    Hi

I am new to this game and could do with some help!

My partner's father was a British citizen, Henry Robson, dob 16 May 1924 (we think). He was in the RAF during the war as a parachutist. He was posted to Canada, stationed at Medicine Hat. He married a girl call Constance and had a daugher called Gloria who we believe was born in 1946 ish. Henry (also known aas Harry to his friends!) and Constance divorced around 1950 and Harry returned to the UK where he remarried.

My partner Sandra was a child of Henry's second marriage and has never seen her half sister as her mother would not allow any contact. Before he died Henry asked Sandra to find her half sister Gloria.

The only other information we have on Gloria is that she married a guy called Hal and had twins called Bobbie and Bonnie.

Anyone got any any idea how we go about tracing Gloria who we presume still lives in Canada????

    Any help gratefully recieved.

    Thanks

    Tony

    Hi Tony

Hope that the following helps to begin the quest to put Sandra and her half-sister in contact.

I've been looking at the passenger lists and have found Constance and Gloria travelling across to the UK and back as follows:-

Constance J Robson and daughter Gloria J Robson arrive into Liverpool on 9th Sept. 1944 from New York on the SS Umgeni. Constance is 22 and Gloria 1 and their proposed address in the UK is 15 Duke Street, Whitley Bay, Northumberland. Their last residence is in Canada.

They return on SS Gripsholm leaving Liverpool on 22 June 1946 arriving in New York on 1st July. Mr. H. Robson, 15 Duke Street, Whitley Bay is given as their next of kin - husband/father - and Constance's mother - Mrs. L. Smith Railway Street, Medicine Hat, Alberta - as the address of the relative they are going to join. Constance is 23 and Gloria 2.

So it looks like they came over to live in the UK for that short period and at least this info confirms Gloria's birthdate as 1943/4 and Constance's maiden name probably Smith and bithdate 1922/23 in Calgery.

If you would like copies of original documentation please PM me with your e.mail address.

I'll keep digging to see if I can find out more

    Hi

Well I have to say that I was dumbstruck when I read your mail. How you knew to look on passenger lists and how you found anything is amazing to me.

I am sure that these are the two we are after as my partner Sandra was born in Whitley Bay and remembers the address in Duke Street. She thinks that it was lived in by her father's (Henry) sister. I guess that I can look at the electoral role and try to see who lives there now but I would be very very graetful for any other help you can give as I wouldnt even thought of looking on passenger lists let alone how you find them nearly 60 years ago!

Yes I would appreciate copies of any documentation that you have dug up. My e-mail address is as discussed.

Once again many thanks for your help and we both appreciate anything else you can come up with or ideas you may have.

    Kind regards

    Tony

I got a very helpful reply from a member who found out from passenger records that Gloria came to the UK with her mother between 1944 and 1946 before returning to Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Although I found out one or two additional details about Gloria and her mother A am at a loss as to where I go next.

Anyone got any idea how I even start to find Gloria from her address in medicine Hat in 1946!!!!!

    Thanks

    Tony

    Any help gratefully recieved.

    Hi Tony;

The Calgary Public Library in Calgary, Alberta, Canada http://www2.calgarypubliclibrary.com..._resources.htm has the following:

    Medicine Hat
    • Henderson's Directory (Peel microfiche) 1913, 1917, 1932, 1934, 1937, 1941, 1946, 1948, 1950
    • Polk City Directory, 1950, 1958, 1999

Perhaps you can get someone in Calgary to do a search for you.

    Sincerely,

    Al Parsons

    Hi Tony

"I see that you have already written to the Medicine Hat newspaper and had your request published there which might generate some interest and response.

It seems, from this website, that the Medicine Hat Library is willing to look up obituaries.

    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/vwcan.html

If you could find the obituary for L. Smith it would show whether Constance remarried or moved away from Medicine Hat and it also might give Gloria's married name depending on timeframes. Constance could very well still be living. Play around with Canada411.ca and see what various name combinations give you - at least it comes with a map so you can see where these places are in relation to Medicine Hat.

I would also ask the library to look up your South Railway St. address in directories. That should also give you Constance's father's name and you can look for his obituary as well. If the Medicine Hat library doesn't have a full set of directories for the area you could always see what is held by the Calgary Public library, a larger centre so perhaps it has a bigger collection to look through.

Was the information that Gloria married Hal and had twins from her father Harry. If it was from another source is there a possibility that they might have more information. "

There cannot be too many Gloria Robsons in Medicine Hat, or indeed , Alberta. Canadian Births Marrriages and Death must produce something.
