    Many thanks for your reply

I know John married Eliza Bond Rule. Their children were ( not in order of birth ) Mark, Phillip,John,Vincent & Priscilla ( my Great Grandmother.)

They lived at Higher Bowden Okehampton & John was a gardner I think it was a doctor he worked for & would love to find his name as well.

They migrated to Australia abourd The Lady Jocelyn. arriving in the Port of Adelaide. From here thy went to live in Scotts Creek in the Lofty Ranges just out side of the capitl city of Adelaide. Here they remand until their deaths John 1911 & Sarah in 1912.

I would love to know more about their life in Okehampton & also the Gliddons in gererations before John. I would love to go back as fr as I possibly can

Looking forward to haring from you again.

    Hi Jan

Do you know the date of their migration so that I know what year to stop looking for them in the UK - were any of their children born in England? Did John or Eliza have brothers/sisters. Do you have info on birth dates/places.

Don't worry if you haven't but would all help to narrow the searches.

    Hi Jan

Have found the answers to some of my questions.

I have 1871 census for John and family living at Higher Bowden, Okehampton.

John is listed as being a Farm Labourer B: 1829 Northlew, Devon (this is approx 7 miles from Okehampton)

Eliza B: 1832 Bridestow, Devon (about 6 miles from Okehampton)

    Vincent B: 1858 Okehampton

    John Henry B: 1861 Okehampton

    Priscilla B: 1863 Okehampton

    Philip Mark B: 1869 Okehampton

The Devon online parish clerks have posted the following information from their Baptism records for the family of Eliza Bond Rule.

    Bridestowe baptisms show:

19 Feb 1832 Eliza RULE d/James & Maria, father a mason of Bridestowe

2 Nov 1834 Mary Anne RULE d/James & Maria, father a builder of Bridestowe

16 Oct 1836 Harriet RULE d/James & Maria, father a mason of Bridestowe

13 Jan 1839 Maria RULE d/James & Maria, father a mason of Bridestowe

James RULE married Maria BOND at Bridestowe 5 Apr 1831.

James' father, William, was buried at Bridestowe age 70 on
    18 Apr 1834

So John doesn't appear to have been a gardener for a doctor - he was a farm labourer for a family called "Pellow" who ran Kerslake Farm, Meldon, Okehampton. If you search maps on google.co.uk and enter "kerslake farm Okehampton, Devon EX20" you can see how it looks today. Higher Bowden is a cottage within the farm's grounds.

In 1851 John is described as a servant (farm labourer) living at Kerslake which is being run by a Jonathan and Patience Pellow. Jonathan is described as a Farmer of 200 Acres employing 3 labourers.

In 1861 John is living with Eliza, and sons Vincent and John at Higher Bowden. Kerslake Farm is now being run by the eldest Pellow son Thomas and his wife Ann.

I have not found John in 1841 or any christening records for him so have not found any clues to his parents. Other researchers give them as a Joseph and Hannah Hill - but I have not been able to verify this however, the Devon Online Parish Clerks offer free assistance and look ups - I'm sure that they will be happy to help.
