    Default Bernard McGown a convict

I am researching Bernard McGown a convict. His master was John Hooke of Bayley Park. I could not find where Bayley Park was until I read Marion's information on John Hooke.

I wonder if the records also hold information on the convicts who were at Bayley Park & Wirragulla. I have driven past Wirragulla several times and wondered about it

    Yes Marion, that's him!!

You now know as much about him until his marriage in 1852 at Maitland NSW to Jane Baker as I do. There is no Jane Baker of the correct age in the NSW BMD records or ship arrivals that I can find but I believe there was a Sarah Baker arrived on the Neptune in the 1830's and lived at Sugarloaf near Maitland NSW. The witness to Jane & Bernard's marriage was a Mary Anne Murrel who also lived at Sugarloaf. This Sarah was noted as "no more records of her" in a local History (sometimes family) magazine researched by a rather learned man from Kurri Kurri. I have a lot after the marriage but nothing prior other than that he was with John Hooke at bothBaylet Park & Wirragulla.

    Hi Alandal

There are a number of Jane Baker's that were sent or went to Australia from the UK - but I'm guessing that you have no way of knowing whether any of them are yours or if indeed she reigned from the UK?!!

Do you have the date of their marriage in 1852?

Thanks Geniegenie, but these ladies would have been too old.

Bernard died in 1876 and their youngest child was born 8 months later. Jane was noted as 40 years old at this time so must have been born about 1836. The birth certificates of her children give the location of her birth as Maitland or Newcastle and her death certificate says Raymond Terrace all in NSW. The only birth in NSW was at Kissing Point but that child died aged 7 months.

They were married 31 October 1852 at West Maitland where their first child, John was born 2 years earlier

Whoops! I didn't realise she would have been that much younger than her hubby.

So if Jane was actually born in the UK and travelled to Australia when she was very young then the following are the only possibilities that I have been able to find:-

New South WalesAustralia, 1828-1842: Bounty Immigrants List

Jane Baker Age: 2 Year: 1838 Ship: LADY NUGENT

Jane Baker Age: 5 Year: 1839 Ship: NEPTUNE Father: Baker, David Mother: Baker, Elizabeth Comments: with family

If not and she was actually born in NSW then the only birth records that I have found around that time (between 1834 & 1838) at www.bdm.nsw.gov.au are

V18342570 45A/1834 BAKER JANE Father: THOMAS Mother: JANE

V18342870 45B/1834 BAKER JANE Father: THOMAS Mother: JANE

V183432 47/1834 BAKER JANE Father: THOMAS Mother: JANE

Alandal I don't know if you have seen it but on the Australian Cemeteries Index if you do a name surch for McGowan you will find Jane's grave in Mudgee. The headstone states that it was erected by E Raynor which would be her son in law Edgar Herbert Raynor husband of Elizabeth. Also there are Peter Charles McGowan and his wife Susan. Edgar and Elizabeth Raynor are also there. Rose Ann's husband John is also buried in Mudgee. Just click on the little camera on the right and it has a picture of the headstone.

    The link is http://cemindex.arkangles.com/

Bernard McGowan appears in the Maitland Pioneers Index along with all his children and their marriages. The information came from a Helen Honeysett. If you need it I can pm you the last known address for Helen.
