    Default Henry magoolaghan

Looking for help to trace the above born in Co. Down in 1836 and married to a Mary Magraw from the same place her d.o.b is 1843. I have them on the census from 1861 but cannot trace them back to Ireland using online information.

    Can anyone help please?

    Hi Bernfarr,

Is this them taken from the 1881 census ? The dates of birth match but I can't find them on an earlier census but William should be on the 1871.

There is a copy of a death certificate posted to a public tree on Ancestry for Henry giving his death at age 61 in 1899. He was living on what appears to be Stanley Road and reported by his daughter M A Walsh.

At the Irish Family History Foundation, free to search, but pay to view, there is a baptism for Mary Anne MacAw in 1842 and a Mary Magraw baptism in 1842, both in County Down. Did not find Henry at that site.

However, depending on where they lived at the time, the registration district could be either County Antrim or County Down. Another consideration is whether you are looking for conformist records or non-conformist, i.e. RC records and such, because mandatory registration for conformist records began in 1845 and non-conformist began in 1864.

    Hi

Thank you for the information, it was me who posted the Death Certificate for Henry as their is a big family reunion in New York in August and I cannot go so I am trying to do my bit by getting all the info together.

Thank you for the news on Mary Magraw though as havnt been able to locate her in Co. Down. They were both RC as far as I know, I saw one document at the Mormon records centre for both of them with a Killough reference. Somebody told me the Mormons hold records on everyone. Could Henry have had a different first name in Ireland? I have googled that but it appears Henry was a common Irish name too. I have been to Tyrella in Co. Down where the Magoolaghans appear to have come from which is a few miles from Killough and there is an old grave from the 1800s with both 2 female Maghoolaghans and a Male Magraw in. I know it was common practice sometimes for brothers and sisters from nearby farms to marry, but I feel if I can get the birth or marriage certs for Henry and Mary I will be able to crack it. Thanks for your help though, I really appreciate it. I am subscribed to Ancestry.co.uk for a Worldwide service but they dont seem to have a lot on Ireland, are there any sites in Ireland I could subsribe to which would give me more info?

    Hi,

Here is a link to some Irish websites I had posted in the Links and Tips board http://www.coraweb.com.au/ireland.htm. There are many sites there which may be of help to you, both free and paid.

As for the Mormon FHL, they have a large collections of Irish records on microfilm and the staff is very helpful (they have been for me). The records include filmed copies of baptism records and extractions of birth records.

You may want to consider looking at local church records to find records to find marriage/baptism records. This is a link to Catholic Local History http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/Catholic-Ireland.htm. Some of the older parishes are not around and they have been consolidated with a neighboring parish. That is the case for me with one line of research I have been pursuing.

Another thought may to get birth or baptism records for his children, perhaps the oldest and there may be a sponsor listed that would give you a link back to Ireland.

    Good luck!

    Hi Duvessa,

I posted the 1881 census to check that it was the same family that you were talking about as you said that you had them from 1861 which I cannot find.
