Was his name Joseph Brown, by any chance?
Find out which railway line went through Pulborough at the time and then see whether staff records survived. This might help:

Following on from other replies, if you post his name, and approx year of birth we can look for him on census records. That's assuming he would have been a Station Master, or railway employee in 1901 or before.

Hello - no very sorry, I've just got a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate, his father was Edward Hotston.
