    Default Cates

I'm trying to find some details of my grandmother's family CATES, who lived in London (Lambeth I think), she was born around turn of the century - her name was Elizabeth Cates, and her siblings were Alice, Maud and Harry.

I'm trying to find out if there is any Romany ancestry on her side of the family. Cates isn't a common Romany surname, however Coates is. Cates apparently sometimes becomes Coates on documents.

Elizabeth married twice, first to John Griffin with whom she had three children: Vera, John (Jack) and Walter. She later remarried William Tunbridge, and they lived on a caravan site in West Wickham in the early 70s.

    thanks

could this be her first marriage

    DEC Q 1914 Fulham 1a 563

    Elizabeth Cates

    John Griffins

If so then the M/C will give you

    details of her father.

There are a few possible births at the turn of the centry which could be her.

The M/C would give you an idea of her age which would help.

thanks!! that's brilliant and so fast and yes they are my grandparents (but it's John Griffin without the S at the end). I am useless at this ancestry lark, don't have a clue where to find marriage certificates... where did you find that, and is it free of charge?
