Default Help needed on William James

    Hi there,

I am hoping that you can help on a sticky problem that I am trying to unravel on my own family tree.

My grandmother, who was born as Marjorie May Brimmell in 1910 was born out of wedlock and I have established that her mother is Sophia Violet Brimmell (b 1890) and father is William James (born around 1877). They subsequently got married in 1913 in Kingston Registry Office Surrey. According to the marriage certificate that I have, William James was a seed merchant clerk and lived in Wimbledon, UK at the time. His father was a John James (deceased) and was a building contractor.

I am trying to find out more on the William James branch and I am drawing a blank. Are there any useful tips and alternatives that I can employ as the census searches from 1901 and before do not shed any light.

Many thanks to everyone for their anticipated help.

    Hi there

You probably already know this, but there is a record for a birth of a James Edward Brimmel 1874 Lambeth

also a census for 1901 for a James E Brimmel, head, 29, painter and decorator, born Lambeth, with wife Louisa, aged 31,born Kennington,Jessie L, daughter, b Lambeth, Grace l, 2, b Cottenham Pk Wimbledon, and Ivy K, 4 months, born ditto Wimbledon; all living at 7 Tennyson Rd South Wimbledon

Given the name and trade - may be a relative? May be worth tracing him back and seeing if anything turns up.

There are a couple of other worth mentioning - an entry for a James John Brimmel Dec 1881 Upton Upon Severn

There is a birth entry for a John James Bramley, Sep 1865 Bermondsey

if you cannot trace him before the marriage then perhaps he was living abroad or alternatively William James is not his birth name.

Thanks again for everyone's responses. I am ok with the Brimmell side of the family. It is William James that I am struggling to locate. Are there likely to be any other sources that might be able to assist me?
