Thread: Heworth near Gateshead - any locals who can help?

I'm trying to find a record of the birth of my GGF. He was Bartholomew Cunningham and on the 1861 census is aged 5 and recorded as living and being born in Heworth Lane, Heworth, Gateshead. On later census returns it varies to Newcastle, Blaydon and Felton.



Does anyone know the local area and point me in the direction of church records? I can find no record of his birth on the civil registration so would like to find a christening if possible. Living Cunninghams are RC so this may be the case for Bartholomew and his family group.

I have had the same problem with my Scorer family - I am not sure about the RC records (though do have RC family to track in that area) but the C of E parish extends much more than you think - its part of the parish of Jarrow - Heworth is from the 1690s but is stilll part of the old parish of Jarrow - perhaps it may be the same for the RC records too?

Thanks. The following generation of the Cunningham family are most definitely RC. I'll need to get in touch with the local FHS and see if they can help.
