Thread: Matilda Tindall-1822

I am having a tough time trying to trace Matilda and could use some help.

What I know- Father William Tindall and mother Ann

Baptised 24 Nov 1822 Chelsea

Married Nathan Brooks 05 Feb 1843 St George Hanover

A Nathaniel Brooks died Dec 1844 Marylebone who I assume is the husband.A Matilda Brooks married Sep 1848 Shoreditch but I have no idea if this is the correct Matilda.I tried searching the census by matching Matilda with the male surnames from the register but no luck.Also tried looking for Matilda Brooks assuming she did not remarry but no luck.

I have found her in 1841 under the surname Tindell

William Tindell 70 Labourer

Ann 50

Harriet 20

James 21 Journeyman

Matilda 15

Edward 1

All born in county



The transcription gives the address as 2 Durlings Cottages, St George Hanover Square, Middlesex but looking at the original the Enumerator has written 10 Spring Gardens next to the family. The handwriting is not very clear so I think the word is Spring.

If so, is William [the 70 year old] her father



Spending £7 on the 48 certificate would give you the confirmation

I have the marriage certificate and yes William is the father.

The 1881 census throws a spanner into the works if it is the right Matilda.The date is close but the place is wrong and where did the kids come from?It seems strange that the children would be born 18 yrs after the presumed death of the husband.Too bad no one showed up in 1871.

Assuming Matilda did not remarry then there are three possible deaths - Mar 1886,Jun 1891 and Dec 1891.Dec 1891 is closet to age but Matilda Augusta is new.I do not want to buy 3 certificates to find the right one assuming she did not remarry.
