Default Esther Jane Hird nee Hall and family

    Hello everyone,

I have Esther Jane Hall born 1878 Holborn area of London. Esther married Charles Harrison Hird in Edmonton 1899. Charles H was born 1877 Bingley Yorkshire.

I have not been able to find Esther and Charles on the 1901 Census. I then find Esther leaves England with her 2 yr old daughter Eleanor Annie on the ss Haverford to Philadelphia on the 19th November 1902 to join her husband in Concord, N.Carolina. I have not found a passage out to Philadelphia for Charles.

I have found Esther back in Edmonton, England on the 1911 Census living with her 2 children at her parents home. Daughter referred to as Annie and son Jack born 1904 USA. Esther says she is a Widow. I have also found Charles Hird's family living close to Esther in Edmonton in the 1911 Census, Charles Father is a Worsted Agent, so I wondered if Charles could have worked for a Mill in Concord. I am led to believe it was a large Mill town.

I would like to go further with my research, but not sure what to do next as I am not sure if ALL the family returned to England between 1904 and 1911 as I have not been able to find a passage back to England. This means, Charles could have died in the USA, possibly Concord, or if they came back to England, Charles could have died here. I have not been able to find a death date for Charles in England as yet. I would also like to find Jack's birth, possibly in Concord, N.Carolina.

Would anyone know how to go about finding a possible birth and death in Concord, N.Carolina.

    Any help very much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    AudreyJP

    Hello Audrey,

With respect to a birth record for Jack in North Carolina,
births and deaths have been registered in North Carolina state government offices only since 1913. Prior to 1913, the state of North Carolina did not use birth records or certificates of any kind. You might need to work backwards from his death to find where in North Carolina he may have been baptised. There are some North Carolina links

    Hello Helen,

Thank you very much for the websites, I will take a look. I did read something recently about the US records not starting until about 1909 and some later. We were only saying today that perhaps it might be a case of baptism for Jack rather than a normal birth certificate.

I have looked at the GRO BMDS and so far haven't settled on a possible marriage for Jack. I will probably go through the Ancestry deaths year by year to see if I can find him there. I really don't know where Jack would be; in England or abroad.

When I found Esther with the children in the 1911, I can't actually say whether she was just visiting her parents or living with them. As Charles was born in Yorkshire, I wondered if they could have come back to England and gone up to Yorkshire to live and work, and perhaps Charles died there. I just can't prove if they came back to England as a family before 1911.

Thank you again for the websites.

    Kind regards,

    Audrey

    Hi Kptz,

I had Louisa and Eleanor as possibles at first, but then was given the ship passage out to N.Carolina for Esther and her daughter ELEANOR Annie. I was then able to find a marriage for Eleanor A to a Maurice Bright. They had one child named Dennis C Bright. I will continue looking into Dennis, but at the moment, still trying to concentrate on Charles death and Jack's birth. Finding them might be as much chance as willing the Lottery!

Thanks for your help; always appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Audrey

Just a quick message for those of you who have helped me. I received Esther's death cert. Widow of Charles Harrison Hird - Cotton Mill Operator.

I found a possible death for Jack -a Jack H Hird. I may or may not have the right person, but it might help if correct.
