You say he died when your Mum was two, but you didn't say when that was! If you know the year you can find him in the death indexes and order his death cert which will tell you where he died. You can then start to look for a burial.

    Hi Amanda

The best way of researching your family tree is "proving" as you go along. "Proving" means buying certificates ( or checking Parish Records at your local archives, easy if you happen to live where your ancestors were born/married!)

Listen and record what your famiy tell you, but be open to suggestions!

I had a look for your grandads birth details using his mothers "surname" you suggested as LUFF, and found nothing. However, I have found the following:

    MARRIAGE:

Auburn GILBERT & Violet H DODGE

Dec Qtr 1916 Devonport Vol 5b Page 679

    BIRTH:

Eric W J GILBERT Mothers maiden name DODGE

    Sep Qtr 1919 Devonport Vol 5b 456

    MARRIAGE:

Violet H GILBERT & Harry LUFF

Dec Qtr 1925 Portsmouth Vol 2b Page 1109

So it seems that Auburn died before Eric was 6 years old, and Violet remarried...hence family lore thought that Violet was a LUFF by birth.

Personally, I would send for the Marriage certificate of Auburn & Violet. In my (humble) opinion, the birth registration for Eric W J confirms the marriage is the correct one. Erics birth cert will confirm place & date of birth, informant and mums maiden name and fathers occupation.

The marriage cert of Auburn & Violet will give you the following details: Age, occupation, abode of both Bride & Groom. And also Fathers name and occupation of both Bride & Groom. There will also be witnesses to the marriage that MAY link in to your family tree. Therefore, this will be 7 pounds well spent, whereas you could purchase Erics birth certificate when funds are more "free"!

Once you have confirmation of all this information you will be able to trace back further.

    Good luck with your research

Just had a quick look on Ancestry and this is a possible family for Violet in 1901, The marriage cert will prove her father:

    1901 Census:

John J Dodge Boilermaker Age 42

Hammer ( I belive this looks like Hannah on original) age 33 Wife

    Maud E dau age 7

    Violet H dau age 4

    John J son age 2

    Good luck with your research

    Well done Loz!

I was about to start on this request, before I'd got far I read your post and you've covered it all.

Amanda, I would go with Loz's advice. Once you have the marriage certificate come back to us and we'll try our very best to help.

Incidentally Amanda, when was your mum born? You say 'he died when your mum was two' If we know when your mum was born we may be able to find his death record and be able to help with his burial details.

Lastly Amanda, don't feel you are being a nuisance (the impression I get) you aren't, we here are always happy to help. I know we ask a lot of questions.....but they are necessary, as the answers help us find the info you are looking for.

Give us all you know Amanda and well do our best.

    Good luck.

Default Good work, wish i had found this sooner

    Hi All

Thanks to Loz for finding out so much, (quick intro) I am Amanda's cousin my father is Auburn Broadbent (Gilbert). I have just found this website after looking for info.

To fill in the blanks for those interested.

Auburn Gilbert was an Australian solider in the first world war and was not mentioned as the father on Eric's birth cert, but is listed as grooms father on his marriage cert to Kathleen

Eric William John married Kathleen Nolan in Petersfield in 1942

Eric later was killed in an accident in shropshire in 1946, it appears that he worked at Ditton Priors which at the time was a Naval armament depot. Not sure if he was in the Navy or just a contractor. I have contacted the church at Petersfield but there does not appear to be a record of burial.

Just wanted to see if anyone can suggest how to find a record of burial, there are 2 churches in bridgnorth, where the death cert is registered but i cant find the indexes. Also does anyone have any suggestions on how to find info that maybe usefull would be great.

Any advice on further avenues would be great.

    Cheers
    Stuart

    Stuart

The death of Eric WJ GILBERT is recorded at Bridgnorth Shrops OND 1946 9a 102 aged 27, this will advise who the informant was, relative or Coroner

If it was an accident there is likely to be a Coroners report and a news entry in the local paper...unless case sensitive!

This may lead to cremation /burial details

If Eric did not live in Bridgnorth it is likely that 'he' was taken home
