    Default Batten/Brackley help please!

I am trying to find out about my nan's side of the family. My nan was Olive Rose Batten born 10 April 1925. Her mother was Rose E Brackley( found this on freebmd) and She married Alexander Batten in Watford in 1917, then the trail seems to go cold. Any advice / suggestions !!!!

    Hello

There is a Alexander Lewis Batten Sept 1889 in Watford and a couple that could be Rose do you have any other info, it might be a good idea to order the marriage cert it would give you fathers names and how old they were when they married.

    Hi Sannah,

As your nan was born only in 1925, then there may well be members of her family still alive. I cannot stress highly enough how important it is to catch the rest of her generation who may still be with us! I have spent the last 30 years trying to track down one branch of my mothers side, and ignored this golden rule - only to find a distant aunt who had lots of family info - and died 3 weeks prior to me trying to contact her. (and all her family say she knew everything about the family).

Think about everyone who was related to your nan. Target the females especially - the oldest and youngest the daughters the most - at that time by and large the men are uninterested in genealogy - it is the mums who pas the info on - the men are at work but the girls tend to work with their mum in the house - and that is when the information is passed on.

My daughter has recently married a man whose parents died young - and as a result there was little info about his family - I followed this rule, contacted the female relatives - and you wouldn't believe what information has come out. I even now have found a relation in NZ who is identifying photos dating from the 1880s who we did not know who they were. She is now 84, grew up with them all - and can!

Lookk at the wider picture and don't hesitate to contact the wider family. They will probably be thrilled to hear from you - and tell you all sorts of information you never knew - and also may well have old photos you did not know existed.

    Best wishes.
