    Default Marriage of Richard Cherry

    Hi All

Am unable to find any entry for the first marriage of Richard Cherry(b1845) to Ann Elizabeth Smith (b1845/6) around 1868, they had a child Ann b april 1869. They both lived in Hull as far as I know, so fair to assume that was were they married, but as I say cannot find any entry for the marriage. Help !

    Cheers

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

No sign of the marriage, however think I have found him on the census, his birth and her death.

    Birth

    Name: Richard Cherry

    Year of Registration: 1842

    Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep

    District: Blackburn

    County: Lancashire

    Volume: 21

    Page: 15

There is, of course, the possibility that they never married!!

1871 England Census for Walton Street, Swanland, Batonsville, Yorkshire

    Name: Richard Cherry

    Age: 28

Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 4777; Folio: 16; Page: 3; GSU roll: 847339.

    Sculcoates Registration District covers Swanland.

Swanland, St Barnabas Church Parish Records should be the route to go, though I don't know where they are held.

    Deaths Mar 1872

    CHERRY Ann aged 27 Sculcoates 9d 107

He appears later with Harriet as his wife.

    Is this the correct family

Should you need more census results, let me know.

    Hi Markf

Yes that's the right family. I have the census entry, that's where I encountered Ann E..I think the parish records are held at Hull library but can easily check. According to Annie's birth cert they were married that's where I obtained Ann E maiden name. Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to get out of my armchair for once

    Cheers

Hi achates37. This response is so late that perhaps you won't see it. The Ann you found with Richard may be his sister rather than his wife. Richard's brother Thomas was born 1840 Blackburn and their sister Ann in 1845 at Preston. You will find these siblings with their uncle Septimus Cherry in Hull 1851 and 1861 censuses. Septimus' sister Frances married Benjamin Watson, brushmaker, Hull, and this may be the connection that got your Richard into brushmaking. Thomas senior was baptised 8 May 1808, Sculcoates, Hull, was a joiner though his father and four brothers were all shipwrights or sailors. He died 1869, so I'm told by another researcher. An Agnes Cherry died Dec qtr 1848 in Settle, so there is a good chance this is the Agnes nee Downs who was mother of your Richard. Thomas and Agnes had married at Manchester cathedral 3 Nov 1835. Another researcher has said that the wife of your Richard was Harriet Kay and that they married in Hull in 1873. I'm descended from Thomas senior's brother, yet another Richard. All the best with your research in this very fruitful Cherry orchard!

Thanks, Elsabels. Can I do that by just putting Achates37 in the first box, and AA will send it on? I'll give it a go and see what happens.
