Default Help finding Marriage, Poss Durham

    Hi,

I have been trying to find a marriage record for 3 x Gt Grandparents, unfortunately surname is giving me a problem, sometimes he is called Glaffling, or McGlafflin, or Maclaughlin. His name is George he was born in Sunderland about 1800 she is Elizabeth born Tan Hill,Westmoreland, I don't know her maiden name. In census I have found them living in Bishop Auckland and Cockfield. I have looked for Tan Hill but can't find area on a map. Does anyone have any idea of the best place for me to look for records. Their first child was born in 1825 in Auckland. Any help much appreciated.

You would need to look at the parish marriage registers for the place their eldest child was baptised and then move outwards in a circle checking all the other parishes. Parish registers will be at the county archives. You might also be able to order film of the registers at your nearest LDS family history centre.

Online there's www.familysearch.org and www.freereg.org.uk which are both free but may not have the parishes you want.

Or there's payperview registers on www.findmypast.com which have been done by local family history societies.

Or the relevant local history society may have done an index or transcripts to such marriages. Some societies offer searches for a surname and variants for a small fee.

I've just joined this site because I'm looking for McGlafflin connections.Your grandparents are also my husbands.

He is from a line from William Cherry who married Mary Glaffin or Mc Glaffin or McGlafflin. He also has a connection with the name via Elizabeth McGlafflin who married John HENRY from Norfolk. The HENRY name is his original connection. Any connection with you. I do hope so.

    Hi Geordyordy,

I have not been able to find a basptism record for Mary Glafflin, I have found a marriage to William Cherry tho, I'm not sure if Mary is the daughter of George and Elizabeth. The Elizabeth McGlafflin you mentioned, who married John Henry, was she born in about 1849?

Thank you Jeuel and Noggin for your helpful comments.

    Hello again Geordyordy,

Have just found the family on the 1941 census name shown as Maclaughlin, Mary is with them, she was born about 1832.

I have just received a death cert for Elizabeth wife of George she is shown as McGlaffling on there, I had hoped to see a maiden name as I have been unable to find a marriage for them.

This change of surname is a bit of a pain, Ann who married my gt gt grandfather is shown on her marriage cert is Glaffling, but is McGloflin in baptism records

    Regards

Hi, Jeuel, if they might have been from Jarrow or Gateshead this site has some parish record transcriptions for the Methodist circuit.

Things are getting a bit confusing from this end.

Can you tell me who your Ann - (G.G.Grandmother) is child of.When was she born. We haven't got her on our records.

Our Elizabeth McG who married John Henry was born 1829 (1861 census).

The other Elizabeth we have was born 1849 - both Elizabeths have parents called George & Elizabeth so either there are 2 seperate famillies or the younger Elizabeth is a Grandchild.

    Hope you understand this

    All the best

    Brenda

    Hi Brenda

My Ann was born 1827 her parents are George and Elizabeth. She married George Coates in 1849, on her marriage cert she is shown as Glaffling but on her baptism record she is shown as McGloflin.
