Thread: School registers

Hello.

According to the 1891 andf 1901 census records my grandfather William Thomas Ransom was born in in about 1865 in Upper Clapton, Middlesex. I can find no birth certficate for him, or any reference to him in this place of birth in other census records. I thought I would try searching school registers in the Upper Clapton area. Can anyone tell me how to go about this, please? Or any other suggestions?

School registers, where they survive, would be at the London Metropolitan Archives. But education wasn't compulsory till 1870s, and its possible your chap went to a charity school.



I haven't been able to find my father or his brothers in their school registers because the relevant years haven't survived.



I would say that the census nearest to William's birth would be most likely to have the correct birthplace. 1891 and 1901 he might just be assuming that where he was brought up or the earliest home he could remember was his birthplace.
