You could perhaps try a search for his army records - they may give more information - if they survived - and could start with a (free) search for him at the National Archives.

I also have ancestors from Limerick and rather wrote off getting back any further, but it turned out that many of the registers for the local area had survived and after a search of over 20 years I finally managed to connect them back to the early 1700s, - so don't give up, you just never know. Best wishes.

    Hi

There is a very good book that I was able to borrow (I hope this info doesn't contravene the rules of this site, but we are talking some time ago and so I am not sure if it is still available):

"Irish Records: Sources for family and local historians" printed by Ancestry, ISBN 0-916489-22-1

It gives details of all the registers available in Ireland, given by county, and where they are, and I found that information invaluable in tracking them all down. I then did as much I could personally, and paid a reputable researcher in Ireland to do the parts I couldn't.

    Hope this helps. Somerset

    Hello,

You might find the Ireland pages of Genuki useful regarding what is available.

Those are interesting (ie very English sounding) surnames for the area- do you think it might have been possible that his father was in the army as well?

hi his father could have been in the army i have no way of knowing .on Josephs marrage cert his father is given as deceased ..cannot find a marrage record in brs genealogy for william and rebecca .in kilkenny ..only know Joseph was christened into the church of Ireland in mothell ..when he died in england in 1901 it said in nis obituary he joined the kilkenny fusiliers at limerick ..i have looked at the griffith evaluation for ireland and was quite surprised at how many prices there were ..i think his parents must have been well educated .because he made sure all his children had a good education they were teachers or doctors ..it was strange his wife and children were all roman catholic religion but he stayed church of irelnd and was buried from church of england church ..he was also involved in charitable matters in england and his family in england had a servant ..so money was not short ..i have requested several times any prices in kilkenny or limerick would they get in touch with no luck ...maybe they are all gone from there now ...very gratfull to you and everybody who has taken the time to reply ..but i really do not know now how i can go back from his birth ..but hey what you never know maybe one day i will find out about his mum and dad regards jo
