I am picking up conflicting info as to whether I am able to look for my Grandfathers navy service records or not. He died in 1999 and served I think between 1939-1945. Although this is conflicting because he service number, P/JX 132913 suggests (with the J) that he served 12 years plus?



Looking around I can't work out how I get his records, some sites suggests that he would appear on the Navy List which is freely available, however National Archives say that only pre 1923 records are publicly available.



I need to find out which ships my grandfather served on, so that HMS Hood Assoc can add him to their crew list and add his name to some pics on their site, I have emailed MOD, from their website also.



I can't do a next of kin request as I am not in touch with any of my family, and both my grandfather and grandmother have passed away, and I am not next of kin??



Can anyone help with a way to find the information I need...?
