    Default Looking to Move Forward...

    Hi

I could use some advice.... I would like to begin by moving forward with my paternal side of the family...My paternal grandparents had 5 kids, and 3 of the 5 had 9 each...each of their children have also been fairly prolific, and second (and a few third) cousins abound...is there some kind of chart or free software that would serve me best? I would like to get all the presently living into a one or two sheet chart for starters...Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi,

I have several family tree software packages and haven't really found one that does this very effectively - they are all either so small as to be useless, or so large they take up the whole floor. I don't like the standard genealogy packages very much as I find it hard navigate through large trees (and one or two are very large), but prefer to see a visual picture I can navigate through easily. (If you use GR you will know what I mean). I have only found one easy to use package that I tried as a freeby with one of the magazines, and liked it so much that I went and bought a copy, but even with that can't get a single A4 tree out of it (and I just can't cope with lots of sheets of paper)

A method that does work for me (though does have its limitations ) is to type my trees up using Word and a very small font, one A4 page per branch. It takes ages to do it at first but then it gives me a single sheet of A4 (landscape) as an overview. I keep them in a file, all together, (each family line also has a large lever arch file and I also put a copy in that) and use this when I go to record offices etc and want to check something. I annotate straight onto them, and then adjust them all later. It is then also really easy to e mail or post a copy of particular branch to various relatives etc, rather than having to send them a whole tree.
