    Default Death Registration problem

    I am having a problem in ordering a death certificate for an Ann Tindall who died 1851-60.The most likely canidate is an Ann Tindal*(notice the *).who was registered Mar 1853 Marylebone.When I ordered the certificate I received a reply stating that there was no Ann Tindal showing at the reference given.

    I double checked the reference and there were no errors on my order.

    What now?

    Hi,

    Where did you find the reference?

    I have checked both FreeBMD and the St catherines Register and there is no death recorded in Marylebone for an Ann Tindal in the March quarter 1853.

    I know that when I look for marriages on the Lancs BMD site if there is confusion over names eg one of the parties has been married before, the put a * next to the name. If you click in the name it usually gives an explanation such as the marriage is in twice because of name confusion.

    If you found the refernce for the death on a county BMD site (part of UKBMD) then try clicking on the name

    It is there, but I don't know what significance the asterisk has, sorry. Maybe someone else can help?

    Taken from freebmd.

    Uncertain character format

    * (Asterisk) Several adjacent uncertain characters. A single * is used when there are 1 or more adjacent uncertain characters. It is not used immediately before or after a _ or another *.

    Note: If it is clear there is a space, then * * is used to represent 2 words, neither of which can be read.

    Unreadable entry

    The symbols in a name or number, such as * _ [ ] { }, indicate that the transcriber was unable to accurately read the index. These symbols use a convention called the Uncertain Character Format (UCF) to describe the ambiguity;

    If you look at the original image on FreeBMD it is virtually unreadable. I viewed the original image on the site I subscribe to and the entry is quite clear

    Thanks everyone.If the death is registered in Malton which I think is in Yorkshire then it is not the one I am looking for.My Ann Tindall was living in Westminster with her daughter Harriett Williams in 1851.

    Back to searching.
