    Default Ship Records for 1851-1855

Does anyone know if there are any ship records online for ships leaving England for America in the 1850's? I have ancestors who were in England in the 1851 census and in Michigan, USA in the 1860 Census, but I haven't been able to find a record of them arriving in America. It is for William and Ann Berry and their children, Martha, John, Charles and James.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

    Hi Dianne,

Did they remain in the USA ? If so, how far have you manged to trace the youngest member of the family. The later censuses give the year of arrival. The latest ones, the full date. It is possible that the name has been mistranscribed from the passenger list. With this date it might help to find them easier.

If either of these can help see;- http://www.ancestryaid.co.uk/boards/...tml#post193376

Supposedly, the family first went to America in the 1830's with 2 or 3 children, and John and Charles were born in New York in 1837 and 1839, and the family returned to England before 1841. Another child, James, was born in England c1843. According to US census records, John, Charles and James were born in New York, but according to England census, they were born in England. Census records for one child, Martha, states she immigrated in 1850, but that's not possible as she was in England in 1851. Other American census information don't have immigration dates, because they say they were born in New York. I can't find any record of them coming or going either time, nor can I find a birth record in New York for the three boys.

Every document I see, different place names are given for everything. I'm getting very frustrated!

You could try the Canadian records. Its a long shot I know but apparently it was a lot cheaper to sail to Canada and then travel down to the US.

Castle Garden was one of the first places I checked. Not there. Maybe they came over in a canoe!
