Thread: General dealer

I have tried various sources to try to find where my grandmother had a shop, including the historical directories site, so again I am hoping that frsh eyes may be able to help me.



Liverpool between 1900 and 1930.

My grandmothers name was Florence Draper, nee Lowe.

There are lots of references to Lowe because my Great grandfather ran his own business as a tinsmith, dealing in bakery utensils,



My only other thought is that perhaps she worked out of one of her father or uncle's shops. She is down as a general dealer on my mother's birth cert. in 1909.



Can anyone help?

"general dealer" is a vague term, I suspect it might not have meant a shop, but maybe someone who deals in secondhand goods and maybe does house-to-house or operates from home.



I think if you had a shop you might be more likely to be described as a shopkeeper or broker or more specifically detail the goods you sold.

I said it was a shop because I can remember my mother saying about filling the blue sugar bags. Surely she wouldn't have done that from home.



I also suspect that my grandmother was a money lender, which she probably would have done from home ,maybe.

This site suggests that it was a shop that sold everything, so maybe my grandmother dveloped her own business alongside her father's in the same building, in which case I know where that was.

Yes, helped me too as I had assumed it was someone selling cheap stuff. Now its more like a kind of shop that sold the stuff Woolie's used to sell, everyday items people wanted.
