    Default 1911 census help please

I have found my grandfather and his father living Brook St. Stepney in 1911, (I have a copy of the original census). I thought I would look to see who else is in the house. I have entered my grandfather name in 'other members of the household' with residential place. I have started to work my way through the alphabet but all the residents of an institution are coming up! What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Teresa,

If you have a copy of the original census - why do you need to check 'who else' was in the house?

What number Brook Street were they living, and what are their names?

    Hi Slizzy

They are John Forbes 64 and son William Forbes 21 living 5 Brook St. Ratcliff (Stepney).

I am interested to see who else is there, as they are in one room, maybe other members of the family?

    Many thanks - Teresa

    Hi Teresa,

So far as I'm aware it isn't possible to search for other members of a household unless you know their names, if you have LIKELY names you can enter them and see if they appear in the household. However you can do an address search...........I did a search for 5, Brook Street, Stepney, and the result was that three people were living at the address.

    Thanks once again slizzy!

It is possible to see who else is living in a house. Once you have found the person you are looking for and where they are living, enter them at the bottom of the advanced search page in the 'other members of the household' take out everything else except where they are living, then go back up to the top, in the surname box tick 'names starting with' and then work your way through the alphabet - this works for me, except in the case above! Hope it works for you!

    Hi Slizzy

Just to give you an example of how it works.

    Go to advanced search.

Enter Adele Hoad in 'other members of household'

Enter West Ham in 'residental place'

Go up to the top - under surname tick 'names starting with'

Enter 'C' - two names come up Ernest Cressy and Kate Cressy, now enter 'W' - John Willaighby comes up.

I know these are correct as I have a copy of the census.

Hope I have explained it better this time!

    Hi Teresa,

I tried your search example, and for 'W' in surname box (names starting with) I was given just one option 'Wood'. Maybe the box just remembers names you've seached for previously?

Maybe someone else could try, and see what they get. It would be a great feature if it does work - and it's me doing something wrong.

Teresa are you sure that Brook St and the house number you gave for Stepney was not infact The Workhouse? Coming from Westham I know that a great deal of the old Union Workhouses changed there names as such and gave just a street address and number.... For example the Woolwich Union Workhouse changed its address in later years to 79b Tewson Road Woolwich. That might be why you have a lot of names coming up for 1911 and the Census.

    Hi Teresa,

Have you tried with any different names ? When the census first came out there was a loophole which meant people could search. This has now been closed. Maybe it is remembering your previous searches as Slizzy has said.
