    Default Emma Jones abt 1820

I am having a hard time trying to find Emma's birth.I have her marriage and death. In 51 she said she was born in the city(London ?) and in 71 she was born in Lambeth. The problem is her name is very common and of course her father was John Jones.

The only possible lead could be that her father was a brewer which I assume was a person who brewed beer.If this is the case my question is did a brewer require a licence and if so is this info available on the internet? The date of the marriage was 1842.

I don't think you needed a licence to brew beer though you did need one to sell it and where these survive they will be a the relevant records office.

The City and Lambeth aren't exactly next door (separated by the Thames) so it would help if you could narrow it down a bit. Is there a witness on her marriage cert who could be a sibling? Maybe you could trace them and get their birthplace as a starting point.

City of London had umpteen churches and the registers are at the Guildhall library.

    Thanks Helen

The witness angle was a dead end. They were grooms sister and an unrelated person whom I assume was a friend of the groom.

    Hi Ed.

This may not be relevant, but you never know where it might lead....

Do you know what Emma's Mother's name was and where she was born and got married, also where her Father John was born.

It might help to know where Emma was married and to whom.

Unfortunately not because I can not find her birth.

What really hurts in this hunt is that this is my mothers main branch and it looks like a dead end.Oh the bane of common names.

I know exactly what you mean. I too have the same problem with my Great Grandfather, I've been looking for his birth cert for years.

Thanks to the 1911 Census, I found him with his mother and brother. This gave me some dates to go on and I've been able to continue up the tree.

I would still like to find the birth cert, as I would like to see whom (if anyone) is in the fathers section. I know he was illegitimate, as his Mothers husband died years before and she never remarried.

So please dont think your Emma Jones is a dead end....she just a brick wall which needs taking down brick by brick.

What information did it have on the death cert.

Nothing enlightening on the death certificate.
