    Default Glasswork accidents

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to trace records for Sunderland Glassworks especially their records of accidents? I am certain hubby's grtgrt grandfather lost an arm in a glassworks incident. In one census he is described as unable to work. By the next census every one of is brothers as well as himself have changed jobs and no longer work as glass bottle makers. Do hospitals have archives?

    Any advice welcome

    Hello Chrissa

Are the Glass works you mentioned; Hartley's Wear Glassworks, off Trimdon Street, near the eastern end of Hylton Road, Sunderland.

I found this website you might find interesting:

Hartley Wear Glassworks had to close down in 1894. In 1896 the buildings were dismantled so that the land could be redeveloped for housing.

It might be worth contacting the local library to see if they have any information.

    Regards

Thanks for that info Tralena , I lot of my ancestors were Glassblowers and lived in Trimdon Street , Sunderland so this is probably where they worked. Will take a proper look at the site.

Thank you Tralena, that looks very likely to be the place the family worked in, maybe I will be able to find something more out about the Vaseys now.

Apologies for replying so late, I did think I'd replied but must have clicked a wrong button or something since that reply wasn't posted!

    Hi Chris

Why didn't I think of that? Thank you Chris, the local paper is the Sunderland Echo and it will surely have archives! But then I knew AA would point me in the right direction...

I don't have any exact dates to go on, and a lot of what I think is sheer guesswork. But the fact that on one census James is described as a glass bottle maker unable to work, then 10 years later he is described as a bill poster with only one arm plus the fact that his brothers have also changed occupations makes me think an accident at the glassworks was to blame.
