Hi,
Can anyone help me to track down my elusive Hughes family?
Head of the family was John Hughes. He was born in Whitford, Flintshire, in 1809. He was a joiner, and worked for the London and N W Railway company. His work took him all over the country. In 1834 he married Hannah Corns in Stoke, Staffordshire. She was born in 1813 in Stone, Staffordshire.
John and Hannah had quite a number of children, who all appear to have been born all over the place. I found the family in 1861 in Borth Street Newton in Mackerfield (now called Newton le Willows) in Lancashire (ref RG9, piece 2782, folio 73, page 25). This gave:
John Hughes, head, marr, aged53, joiner, b Whitford, Flint
Hannah Hughes, wife, 48, b Stone Staffordshire (so born 1813 - I have details of her baptismal entry in Stone in 1813)
Charlotte E (I think her middle name was Elizabeth but that is not proven yet) um, 24, b Manchester (possibly the Charlotte Elizabeth baptised in All Saints ,Manchester 12 Feb 1837)
Jane Hughes, 22, dau, milliner and dressmaker, b Manchester (poss baptised 27 Jan 1839 also at All Saints Manchester)
Robert, son, unm,20, joiner, b Holywell, Flint (so born c 1841)
Albert, 15, son, 15, smith, born Lancashire, Oldham (born c 1846)
Ernest, son, 12, scholar, born Newcastle upon Tyne (born c 1849)
Luisa (Louisa?) dau, 7, born Cheshire, Lower Teaming (b c 1854)
George H Hughes, son, 4, born Toxteth Park, Liverpool ((bc1857)
there was also a boarder - Joseph Dobie, joiner, 22, b Liverpool
and finally George Corns, widower, 81, fitter, born Staff, Madeley - who was Hannah's father.
There was another daughter - Margaret - born in Stoke, Staffordshire, in 1843, but who had married in 1860 so was not at home on the census.
I can find John the father in the 1891 census, in Manchester, aged 82, as a boarder, widower, and a retired joiner.
Other than that I can't find the family on any other census. Hughes is a common name, but yet I just seem to be up against a brick wall. Can anyone help find them on any other census apart from the 1891 and 1861?
My fingers are crossed!
Thanks.
