Thread: Please help totally stuck

Please could someone help. I am trying to find records for my greatgrandfather. Have tried to order his birth certificate and been told they can't find him. They have also told me they can't find a record of his death. As far as I am aware Reith Lennard was born on 10/10/1896 in Whitby and died at sea in about 1948 but... my grandfather says he had a scottish accent and was born in Balloch, Scotland. Can't find any record of him there either. Any ideas very frustrated.

Have you got your dad's birth cert and Reith's marriage cert and have you found him on the census, was he at sea with the Royal or Merchant Navy or was he a fisherman what area did they live in. Think that covers it

There is a Reith S Lennard on the 1901 Census (aged 4) which would be right if he was born in October. Mothers name was Hannah and was living @ Chubb Hill, Ruswarp, Whitby (along with the rest of the family)

Hello again

I know this sounds stupid but there is an entry for a Ruth Stenhouse Dec quarter 1896 in Whitby do you think it might have been registered wrong it would'nt be the first time and it is a funny name.

Thank you so much for all your replies and help. It looks like a possibility that he could be registered as Ruth!!! Which is why when I tried to get his birth certificate they couldn't find him. Jo, if you have any more info I would be very grateful. Kimmy, he was in the merchant navy. Captain of the Maxwell Brander so I have been told but died on board the Dilwara. I have tried to find information about this and get hold of his death certificate but no luck I think Reith and his wife Ida were living in Weymouth at this time and he could be buried there.
