    Default Stephen Poyntz Denning

    Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me trace down the baptism of Stephen Poyntz Denning? I am trying to connect up various branches of the Denning family and its not exactly going well.

I am actually trying to find the baptism/ birth records of a Richard Denning, who may well have been born in Somerset, possibly in the Frome area , who was born about 1767, and who died in about 1809. I have not been able to find his baptism in the Frome Registers, though I have been to the record office to look for it. I have been told he may have had two brothers - one being called Isaac, who joined the army and who had a son also called Isaac in 1820 in India. The other brother was supposed to be Thomas, who had a son - Stephen Poyntz Denning. This Stephen, born about 1793, later married a lady called Matilda. I have found them in the 1851 census, living in Dulwich, and a portrait painter aged 58 born in Newington, with his wife and children. I also found them in the 1861 census, Stephen being head of the family, and an artist and curator of Dulwich picture gallery. Again he says he was born in Newington. I don't know the London area at all and have no idea where to look for his baptism. Can anyone advise me? (There is also a possibility that the family were non comformists). Thanks.

    Hi Sablon,

Thank you so much for your reply.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone may be able to idenitfy which church registers I should be looking for in the Dulwich area, but do appreciate you looking this up for me - it refers to one of Stephen's descendants. I do very much appreciate your looking for me. Thanks. Somerset.

Just a word of warning - there are several Poyntz-Dennings to be found - not all of them related to the famous painter. I believe Lord Denning had Pointz in his line (he was from Dorset) and you will find another Stephen Pointz Denning mentioned in the on line Burkes Peerage, whose daughter married Durham Brookbank family.

Thanks for the information. I am having a very difficult time finding the baptisms of several of the branches and am beginning to think that they are non conformists - I can find the marriages - but the baptisms are another matter! Thanks for the info anyway.
