    Default another brick wall

    hi all

i have hit a total brick wall looking for the births of my ggg grandparents.

They are James gadson mecham (1785) and Letitia butler (1787)

They married at st Leonard's, shoreditch in 1805

I have the burial record for James in 1826 at protestant dissenters burial ground, Gibraltar row, bethnal green aged 41

and Letitia's death cert, derbyshire street, Bethnal green, died of cholera in 1849.

On the 1841 census, Letitia is listed as not of this county (middx)

i have all the children from the marriage and they are all on census. and each one baptised at spitalfields, Christ church.

can anyone please help me with where to search from here for the births, i have tried IGI and ancestry and others, there must be something out there that i just cant see but not for the want of trying.

Cant understand why James was buried in dissenters burial either.

    my head hurts

    Hi Loltel

He possibly could have been a Protestant. Just because no-one else seems to be is irrelevant

A lot of it going on at that time

    You've hit a common problem.

1841 census doesn't give birthplaces (and even where people say they were born in county/not born in county doesn't indicate the truth always!).

London was increasingly attracting people from outside, so Letitia and James could have come from anywhere!

If you can't find it online, you could be stuck. If you are able to get to London you can look in the likely parishes, starting with Shoreditch. London Metropolitan Archives has many and the Guildhall Library has the City of London parishes.

Alternatively, you might find traces elsewhere. If either left a Will they might give clues. Did any of their children have unusual names? Have you tried looking for James with just his middle name as a surname to see if it belongs to a particular area?

The marriage cert would state which parish(es) they were living in at the time of the marriage which might help. Or you could try tracing the witnesses.

It seems that the first son born from the first son shares the middles name gadson, i have searched backwards on the IIGI but no gadson shows up before james or even a gadson/mecham marriage.

i didnt think i could get a cert for an 1805 marriage, is it possible ?

Not everything is on the IGI, or indeed on the internet, hence the need to go to records offices or family history centres.

You can't get a modern-day marriage certificate, but you can get a copy of the entry from the marriage register. Early certs don't have much info, but it should state the parishes the bride and groom were living in at the time, whether they married by banns or licence, witnesses and if the bride and/or groom were under age and needed parental consent.

The FRC has closed now and never had parish registers. Kew has some non-conformist registers.

Church of England registers are at the relevant county records offices. So Shoreditch parish registers are at the London Metropolitan Archives, on microfilm.
