Thread: Barnard Levy

Hi all I have a interesting case that I need some help with,My grt grt grt grandfather Barnard Levy sent from England in 1817 as a convict was born 1797 in London England according to his Ticket of Leave. Now the twist to this story is when he was charged in the Old Bailey his name was Barnet Levi and when he arrived in NSW he used the name of Barnard Levy he married in 1836 under this name had children using this name and when he left NSW and went to Melbourne Victoria he used the name of Barnet Thomas and died under that name. On his death paper's it show's his parents as a Barnet Thomas and Hannah all I can assume is Hannah may of been a Levi or Levy in England. I have tracked his family all around NSW and Melbourne it is the England end that I need the help with, any assistance would be great. Thank's Mark

He may not have consciously decided to change his name, it might have just been misheard by officialdom.



Both Barnet and Levy/Levi are Jewish names, have you checked out
