Thread: Gratwick, Gradwick and Gratwicke

My maiden name is Gratwick, and the earliest direct ancestor I have traced is a John Gratwick b abt 1791 in Lingfield, Surrey (d Feb 1867 in Dartford, Kent) who m Mary Jones of Sutton Kent.



Some of John's children's surnames were spelled Gradwick when the births were registered and I know that Gratwicke was also a common surname at that time.



I have traced a William Gratwick b abt 1797 in Lingfield who may have been John's brother.



Although I have found many Grat(d)wick(e)s in Kent/Surrey/Sussex in the 1700s, I have been unable to link my family to them as I cannot find out who either of John Gratwick's parents were.



If anyone reading this knows who John Gratwick's parents were please contact me. Any help greatly appreciated.

If you are certain John was born in Lingfield you need to look in the parish baptism registers. If the family moved there after he was born you might find settlement papers too. I think you need the Surrey History Centre in Woking for these.
