Default More help please-Radnor Street, District South Chelsea

The certs. I bought answered a few questions but also posed more. Grandmothers birth address is Radnor Street, District South Chelsea in the county of Middlesex but the only Radnor Street I can find is in Islington. There is a Radnor Walk in Kensington, I was wondering if it was the victim of bomb damage and disappeared in rebuilding? Where can I find maps of London from around 1876 to pre WWII? Another discovery is that of an uncle not even my mum knew about. He was killed 1st battle of the Somme (before mum was born) and was awarded the MM. Which is the best way to discover more? I have his name, number, regiment, date of death and grave details, an idea of where he died but not how he won the MM or any other service details. Any pointers please.

    Hello Tony

I have found a Radnor St for Chelsea but not sure what time scale you were looking at, you had 1876 so looked 1881 and 1871. And what was your uncle name that died at the Somme.

    Hello Kim

My grandmother was born April 1876 in Radnor Street, registered sub district South Chelsea, County of Middlesex. I just wanted to know whereabouts it was as I've found where her children were born.

My uncle was Private Henry William Phillips MM., 38151, 9th Bn., Welsh Regiment, who died 7th July 1916, I think at Mametz Wood. I have CWGC info.. I've spent most of today trying to find out how to get a death cert. for him or any other info.. I ordered a birth cert. for someone I thought was him but it wasn't. Maybe with the death cert. or military record I could get proper birth details.

Radnor St Chelsea is still there, it is now Radnor Walk running south from Kings Road. I have a map of about 1918 which shows the same roads and road names around it but with it still called Radnor Street. It is on the 1872 School board map at this web address:

at the top of section G with a Methodist Chapel in it.

Thanks very much for that David.

I did wonder if that was the case after not finding any bomb sites, which was my first thought about what had happened to it. Now I can go to Chelsea with my camera and photograph the addresses if the owners don't mind, and they are still there. Brompton cemetary might also be worth a visit while I'm there, looks like the family all lived in that area.

    Thanks once again
